Summer 2025 saw us invited to a family wedding in the West Country of the UK, a part of the country where I have never quite spent enough time to truly appreciate its unique charm and character. Therefore, we decided to spend our two-week summer vacation back in the UK, allowing us to enjoy quality family time together while exploring new surroundings. It was also a wonderful opportunity to introduce this beautiful and diverse region to my husband and daughter, neither of whom had ever visited this area before.
During a week-long visit to the breathtaking UK West Country, our journey began with a captivating stop at the ancient and mystical Stonehenge. I had driven past this iconic historic site many times but had never taken the opportunity to stop or get close, so it seemed like the perfect destination to break up the journey. We spent time marveling at the towering stones and soaking in the rich and awe-inspiring history that surrounds this mysterious monument. From there, the trip continued westward, arriving in Dartmoor. The days that followed were delightfully filled with scenic coastal walks, exploring quaint, winding streets, and savoring a variety of local delicacies unique to the region.
Next on the itinerary was the picturesque and historic town of Lyme Regis, famous for its fossil-rich cliffs and stunning harbor views. This charming coastal town offered a peaceful yet invigorating seaside experience, full of natural beauty and fascinating history. Finally, our adventure concluded in Totnes, a vibrant and eclectic market town steeped in history and culture. This lively town provided the perfect and fitting end to a memorable week spent exploring the diverse landscapes and rich heritage of the West Country.
After taking in all these wonderful sights, we drove to our guest house for the next few days, a stunning place called Week Barton. This truly is a beautiful, fine home, lovingly cared for by a couple who moved from Hackney. The place really was a quintessential English home. From the moment we stepped inside, the immediate smell of firewood infused into the building created a warm and inviting atmosphere that set the tone for the rest of our stay.
After a wonderful week exploring this part of the UK and celebrating with our family we headed along the southeast to a more familiar place, the Island, my old home - The Isle of Wight.
